What I know vs. what I should know. Part 1

This idea that an educated person should know the basics (the canon) sickens me. It also tells you something about the notion of teaching in this society (in most countries I guess).

That to be a respected member of the society you should know who such and such writer, artist, politician, commander, thinker, etc. was. That it’s bad if you don’t know or remember who wrote what, who lived when, what was the name of the place where a certain battle took place. Or that you never read books by a certain author, or don’t know the basic theories of a certain…
